Mason Park

Located at South 75th and Tipps Streets, on Houston’s east side, Mason Park owes its existence to suburban expansion in the 1920’s and a woman’s decision to honor her husband with a park in his memory in 1930.  The City of Houston acquired 31.75 acres in 1928 and named it Pineview Manor Park after a nearby housing development.

Soon after, Mrs. Dora Porter Mason donated another 69.88 acres in memory of her husband, John T. Mason Park. Mr. Mason was a banker and merchant in Houston who died in 1928, Mrs. Mason died in 1940. Both, Mr. & Mrs. Mason were among Houston's most prominent citizens and civic leaders and philanthropist at the time.

The two parks were combined and named in his honor.  An additional 3.92 acres were bought from the Texas National Guard Armory in 1997.

Along with the one of the largest parks in Houston, Mrs. Mason gave a large bequeath of money for park improvements. Of which $25,000 dollars was used to build the gym and clubhouse in 1949.

Congressman Gene Green led the way on this project by securing $145,500 for the Mason Park Plaza

Mason Park Plaza

The Mason Park Plaza project will provide a gazebo, landscaping, sidewalks, fountains and benches to beautify the west side of Mason Park.

The gazebo, sidewalks and benches will serve as an attractive and safe area for the elderly to walk with their pets or grandchildren.  Additionally, the gazebo will serve as a gathering place for families, a picturesque wedding portrait site, a place for parties and receptions, and a meeting place for artists to play their various instruments.

The walkways will be paved with donor bricks and lined with various hearty flowers and bushes to beautify the area.  In addition, donor benches will be placed at various strategic sites on the walkways.  Donor benches and bricks with family names imprinted will foster a sense of pride for the community and the families of the East end and Mason Park.

Project Scope

The objective of the Mason Park Plaza Project is to create civic pride by revitalizing the west site of Mason Park.  The project includes:

 25’ diameter Pavilion/gazebo

 Plaza w/special paving, lighting, landscaping

 2 Fountains

 Walkways

 Site landscaping
